This last weekend I had a wonderful time celebrating my dear friend Linda’s birthday at Falkenberg Strandbad. A lovely hotel and spa at the west coast of Sweden in Falkenberg. A little more than an hour south of Gothenburg (Göteborg).
We had booked a Gold-package that included a small private VIP suite and massage at the spa. Curled up in cosy bathrobes with a view over the warm water pool and beach, we could see out but others couldn’t see in! Perfect!
And of course we enjoyed some champagne served with complementary fruit and a snack tray. The spa has a relaxing atmosphere where sounds from Africa are playing softly. Perfect for catching up, relax and sipping bubbles!
For dinner the host had reserved a wonderful table by the window with a lovely view of Kattegat, the water between Sweden and Denmark. Perfect for sipping more champagne and celebrate!
For starter we ordered the slow baked veal with an emulsion of marrow. Served with an egg yolk, shaved cauliflower, salsa verde and topped with watercress.
Our main course was a lovely butter baked plaice fillet filled with finely julienne carrots and asparagus. A well balanced bleak roe vinaigrette and smooth beurre blanc gave a perfect buttery topping to the fish.
And as it is in season, it was served with dill tossed new potatoes!
As we are not big on sweets but love cheese, we exchanged the dessert for local cheese – Kattegat Vit from Skreaost (Skrea cheese). Served with homemade seaweed crispbread and tomato marmalade. To the cheese they served Kleine Zalze, a South African Cabernet Merlot Blend from 2010 that had smokey note to it.
The hotel interior design brings back memories of New England resorts as well as the colonial style found at hotels in South Africa and Singapore. I adore the warm feeling of wooden furniture with the tan fabrics.
The beach was right outside! Perfect for a swim or just walking by the shore.
I truly recommend Falkenberg Strandbad for a relaxing time with good food and peaceful atmosphere. I though would say it may be more suitable for couples, as majority of the other guests were, but we certainly had a lovely time!
Remember Life is too short to not eat and drink well!
And enjoy life!
