Every summer my sister and I go to Avalon Hotel in Gothenburg for lunch. So of course we made it this year too. Usually we can enjoy some drinks and food on their patio but this year – oh boy did it rain! Pouring!
One of the main reason we go here at least once a year is for their traditional Swedish dishes. The food is obliviously tasty, or I wouldn’t return year after year. Add to that a relaxing atmosphere and nice and friendly staff.
I really love Swedish caviar (löjrom) so picking the starter was an easy task! As tradition requires it was accompanied by bread toasted in butter, crème fraîche, red onion and finely chopped chives. The Swedish caviar is lightly salted and should be well drained so it can be served in the shape of an egg. And the caviar should stay together also after one cut it with a knife.
We continued our lunch with another traditional Swedish dish – cod loin (torskrygg) served with melted butter. Perfectly cooked, on the light side as it is suppose to be. Accompanied by a light potato purée and fresh asparagus, chopped tomatoes and capers.
To this lovely Swedish lunch we drank a nice Pouilly-Fumé. I will say the wine paired better to the cod than to the caviar.
To my dear sister – I already look forward to our next lunch at Avalon!
